A South African Wedding Blends Vintage Décor with Soft Blue and Jade

Bridal Fashion & Beauty Amy

Tuchinca and Laurence paired garden ceremony details, mixed vintage décor and a relaxed focus on food and company at their South African wedding.

A South African Wedding Blends Vintage Décor with Soft Blue and Jade

For Tuchinca and Laurence, a memorable wedding came down to how the day felt: beautiful surroundings, generous food and drinks, and time for their guests to enjoy themselves. Their celebration in South Africa brought together muted blue and greyed jade, a garden ceremony and a reception filled with vintage finds. The look was personal, but the planning advice behind it is practical: decide what matters most to you, then let the rest follow.

A Timelessly Romantic Modern-Vintage Wedding in Heavenly Shades of Blue & Greyed Jade

Tuchinca had spent six years working with brides through her vintage décor rental company, Moi Décor Hire. She loved romantic, vintage and bohemian styles, while also appreciating clean, simple design. That experience meant she had a clear sense of the dress, flowers, hair and bridesmaids’ outfits she wanted. Still, knowing what she liked didn’t make every part of planning easy.

The couple got engaged after a romantic proposal in Dubrovnik the previous July. Tuchinca initially preferred eloping and wasn’t keen on a large wedding. A small gathering wasn’t realistic for their families: she is half Portuguese, while Laurence is half Italian and half Jewish. After considering their options, they chose to celebrate with their wider families. Their first venue cancelled, adding stress to the process. Tuchinca’s way through it was to return to the priorities she and Laurence shared, rather than spend energy on details such as particular bistro chairs or designer shoes.

That choice shaped a celebration with plenty of character, without requiring every conventional extra. The couple sent electronic invitations instead of printing them, and Tuchinca wore her engagement ring on its own because one ring felt like enough. She also forgot to choose a special perfume and borrowed her sister’s. Her point is simple: there’s room to make wedding choices that suit the people getting married, even when those choices differ from expectations.

A gown chosen before the plans were settled

Tuchinca found her dress at Bride & Co. before the date and venue were decided. She had gone with her mother intending only to explore which shapes suited her. The first dress she tried on became the one. Off-the-shoulder sleeves and soft tulle gave her the old Hollywood feeling she wanted, while the clean, timeless styling kept the look understated. Her mother’s reaction helped seal the decision.

Her sister and stepdaughter were her bridesmaids. They wore tulle in different shades of blue and green, bringing contrast to the bridal look while keeping a shared, soft silhouette. Tuchinca’s mother, who used to design wedding dresses, made her veil and hand-beaded its clip—a family contribution with particular meaning.

A garden ceremony with personal touches

After Tuchinca’s father died of cancer, she asked a cousin who had been close to him to walk her down the aisle. The moment moved them both. The ceremony took place in a garden, where white petals marked the aisle and a vintage-style gazebo framed the couple. A candle chandelier, foliage echoing Tuchinca’s bouquet and voile curtains at the back softened the setting.

The ceremony details offer a useful way to build atmosphere without relying on a long list of additions: repeat a few materials and motifs, then let the setting do some of the work. Here, the garden greenery connected the flowers to the ceremony structure, while fabric and candlelight added warmth.

Six banquet tables, each with its own mix

The reception occupied a long patio with a low ceiling. Six banquet tables filled the space, and vintage string lights helped create an intimate bistro mood. Rather than repeat one identical centerpiece, Tuchinca used the tables to bring in more of the décor she loved. Brass vessels and candlesticks sat alongside white milk glass bottles, candelabras, vintage trophies and lanterns. Old books and mercury votives added more layers.

White hydrangeas, roses and lisianthus were mixed with foliage from the garden. A foliage installation above the head table carried that greenery through the room. For couples considering a similar look, the useful detail is the range of objects, not a requirement to copy every piece: varied vessels and repeated flowers can give long tables a collected feel while allowing each arrangement to differ.

Food also reflected the couple’s focus on guest enjoyment. Kelly Jaynes Cake Boutique made a three-tier cake: death by chocolate on the bottom, lemon poppy in the middle and red velvet on top. Cake pops came in blueberry cheesecake and carrot cake. For the flowers, Tuchinca shared an inspiration image with Terry from Ribbon Design. The resulting bouquet was large, loose and cascading, with muted green tones chosen to sit well with the blue palette.

Photographer Clareece came recommended by a Moi Décor Hire client. Tuchinca wanted soft, natural-light photographs and valued Clareece’s attention to detail and calming manner. The credited team also included planner Terry Parenzee of Ribbon Creative Studio, makeup artist Made Up by Janna, and Longmeadow Venue. Bridesmaids wore Jenny Yoo’s Annabelle dresses; Laurence wore Tiger of Sweden, and the groomsmen wore Eurosuit. Music came from DJ Nelo Dance Jam Entertainment.

Tuchinca’s clearest planning takeaway is also the most adaptable: choose what fits your priorities and family, then give yourself permission to leave out the extras that don’t. Their celebration balanced a full family gathering with personal choices, a garden setting and a reception designed around good company.
