A Romantic Garden Wedding at Rengstorff House: Flowers, Vintage Details and Practical Planning Tips
Katherine and Daniel paired a lakeside garden setting with personal ceremony touches, vintage décor and budget-conscious cake planning.

Katherine and Daniel built their wedding around two things: a lakeside setting they loved and a celebration that felt personal to them and their guests. At Rengstorff House in Mountain View, California, a garden ceremony and reception brought together flowers, vintage details and family stories. Their planning choices also offer useful ideas, from involving both partners in decisions to balancing a statement cake with the budget.

A venue chosen for its connection to water
The couple had lived in Mountain View for two years before the wedding and discovered Rengstorff House while visiting the Shoreline Boat House. Both grew up near the water: Daniel in Palos Verdes and Katherine in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong. They wanted the lake to be part of the setting, drawn to the calm and beauty it brought to the day. Their ceremony and reception took place at Rengstorff House, with the garden and trees creating an intimate backdrop.
Their approach to planning was as personal as the venue. Daniel filmed their engagement video, built their wedding website from scratch and joined every vendor meeting. Both partners took part in major decisions, with the aim of making the day meaningful to their families and friends as well as to each other. Katherine’s advice to couples is a useful reminder amid design decisions: keep sight of what marriage means to you, rather than focusing only on creating a picture-perfect event.
Style with personal details
Katherine wore a Madison James gown with subtle beading and an Art Deco feel. Its intricate design made it the centerpiece of her look, so she skipped a veil and kept other accessories minimal. Her diamond earrings, a gift from her parents, added a sentimental touch. For couples choosing a detailed dress, her styling offers one way to let the gown lead while wearing an accessory with personal meaning.

For the flowers, Katherine gave her florist three guiding words: elegant, whimsical and romantic. Roses were a must, and the arrangements combined garden roses with astilbe, jasmine, poppy, sweet pea, veronica, hellebore, scabiosa, ruscus and wax flower. That mix gave the floral design a varied, garden-grown feel while keeping the couple’s preferred blooms at its center.

Daniel and the groomsmen wore black tuxedos. Daniel paired his with a black bow tie, while the groomsmen wore matching royal blue bow ties. The wedding party also included Katherine’s sister as maid of honor, two childhood friends who traveled from Hong Kong, a college friend and a law school friend. The group reflected friendships from different stages of her life.

A ceremony led by someone who knew them
Katherine asked her brother to officiate. He had been her housemate when she and Daniel met, and was the first person to learn they were dating. Having someone who knew their relationship speak about love and marriage let the ceremony combine thoughtful reflections with personal stories and humor. It’s an approach that made the service feel specific to the couple.

Vintage décor and guest experiences
The reception stayed at Rengstorff House, where the tree-lined garden offered a relaxed, intimate setting. Vintage rentals tied the look together, with details designed to give guests something personal to notice and enjoy. Vintage church doors added character, while a calligraphed mirror served as the seating chart. An on-demand poet typed poems for guests on a vintage typewriter, turning entertainment into a keepsake experience.

Katherine’s planning advice starts with careful vendor selection. She interviewed at least five options for every vendor type and felt the time spent comparing them helped the day run smoothly. Her next step: prepare as much as possible in advance, then trust the professionals on the day and give yourself room to enjoy it. The celebration, she stressed, matters more than how expensive the flowers look.

A dramatic cake with a budget-conscious plan
The couple interviewed at least five bakers before choosing Ally Cakes. Katherine wanted a dramatic five-tier cake and was mindful of costs, so they ordered a cutting cake alongside sheet cakes. That let them keep the tall display cake they envisioned while serving guests with a more budget-conscious setup. She praised the baker’s fresh, locally sourced ingredients and the flavor of the cakes.

Photographer Trynh of Trynh Photo shot the celebration on film. Katherine said she chose her after seeing her portfolio and responding to the photographer’s style. The credits also include wedding dress by Madison James, makeup by Amy Lee, hair by Deanna Thai, the venue Rengstorff House, the bride’s brother as officiant and cake by Ally’s Cakes.

For couples drawn to garden weddings, Katherine and Daniel’s choices show how a venue, shared planning and a few guest-focused details can carry a clear sense of personality. Their boho garden celebration, terracotta floral inspiration, pink and green garden palette and spring wedding ideas offer other ways to adapt a garden setting to a couple’s own style.
